"Old Glory", the symbol of freedom and banner of a great and mighty nation, inspires pride and honor in all Americans. Notice the pride on Santa's face as he respectfully holds his hat over his heart. To symbolize our nation's faith, a Bible is gently tucked in his arm. Not only does Santa hold the flag high, he wears it close to his heart. Our national bird, the great bald eagle, adorns the top of the flagpole, reminding us of the extraordinary courage so many citizens have displayed.
A dove is encircling the tree with a beautiful ribbon bearing the words of our wonderful song, "God Bless America". Representing our 50 great states, there are 50 stars on the tree. To honor our men and women in the armed forces, each branch of the military is standing at attention and saluting the flag that is being raised by our firefighter heroes.
The two children represent our nation's bright future. The young boy holds his Uncle Sam doll while saluting our nation's flag. His little uniform was inspired by a photograph of Brenda at the age of 3½, dressed in a Navy uniform which was brought to her by her father after his tour of duty with the Navy in World War II. The little girl proudly wears her patriotic ribbon while holding her candle high to salute America. The dove in her arm symbolizes the hope of peace for future generations. The wreath with the heart-shaped globe, a dove, and banner of peace collectively symbolize America's benevolence worldwide, always first to lend our many resources. The emblem on Santa's pouch honors the American Red Cross for their global aid in times of need. The pouch is filled with dedicated members of the Salvation Army, our wonderful doctors, nurses, and emergency medical teams, our brave firefighters and policemen, and others, including our search and rescue canine friends.
We are proud that our Liberty Bell still rings, that our Capitol shines brightly, that our Statue of Liberty stands tall, and that our Eternal Flame forever burns. The small church in the distance again represents our nation's foundation in faith and brotherly love.
In memory of the crews and passengers of Flights 11, 175, 77, and 93, there are four stars shining more brightly than all the others. One is being held in the arms of an angel in appreciation of those aboard the Pennsylvania Flight 93, who after repeating the 23rd Psalm, sacrificed their lives to save so many others. It brings to mind John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
Most importantly, to thank God for the grace He has shown America, the hymnal is opened to "Amazing Grace". It truly is the "sweetest sound".
